Word count in Adobe InDesign

Word count in Adobe InDesign?

We now have a new integrated WordPress blog with our website at gretapowell.com and find out about our InDesign courses.

People tend to lean to the assumption that unlike QuarkXpress or Word Adobe InDesign does not possess a word count feature.

It doe’s!!!

Fill the frames full of text then click anywhere in that frame with the Type tool.

Open the ‘Info’ palette and you will find a word count for words, lines and paragraphs.

Select a block of text and InDesign will count the amount of words it contains.

Quick tip! Want more, then install the TextCount.js script from your InDesign installation discs.  You’ll find this in the ‘Goodies’ directory.

  1. This is very helpful. Thank you. Can InDesign count the words for the entire layout? Xpress does it in the Spelling function but I have never found a similar function in ID.

  2. It will count any text that is selected – including table text, text flow. Thanks for the kind comment.

  3. Cool! I didn’t know that. I am writing an English Comp. paper in InDesign and do not want to count the words “manually”. Thanks!

  4. Can you please email me the script as it’s not where you said it would be if you have the CS package.

    Hi Marcus
I don’t have the CS version – but know for a fact the script is there. Look in the Goodies folder on the original CD disc. kindest thoughts

  5. Thank you very much! Both of your suggestions work…I had definitely underestimated the number of words!

I had to hunt a bit for the script. On my CS CD, I found it here:

    D:\Adobe InDesign Technical Info\Scripting\Adobe Sample Scripts\JavaScript

    Thanks again!

  6. Thanks for the tip on doing a Word count in indesign. It saved me a lot of time!! I’m not sure if Adobe illustrator has a word count so I just copied and pasted the words from illustrator into indesign to do a word count. That worked. Just incase someone wants to know.

  7. This is such a fantastic tip! I have been searching high and low. Went to Adobe Exchange – nothing works for mac. Thank you thank you!

  8. One of my clients wanted a rather complex textbook I had worked on translated from French to English. Translators charge by the word, so he was asking me for a word count of that document. I had no idea InDesign was providing word counts. Now I know ! Thanks.

  9. I was looking for the word count too, but for some reason, the “more options” choice is grayed out and so I can’t get the count that I need.
Any thoughts on why it wold be unavailable to me?
    thanks,

  10. Make sure you have got the text selected – that should solve the problem

  11. I thought so too, but the “show options” in the info panel is grayed out even when the text is selected.

I have no idea what I can’t access it. There must be something in some of my settings that is keeping that option turned off.

    (thanks for responding so quickly.)

  13. Great tip but I don’t really understand the people who say they would have counted ‘by hand’. Surely you copy the text and paste it into Word to do a word count? Anyway, now there’s an easier way! :-)

  14. This was VERY helpful, thank you!
